Designed as a weekend retreat for a NYC family, this USGBC LEED® Gold certified house was partly factory-built to achieve its extremely tight building envelope and multitude of other energy saving attributes. Encompassing almost 5000 square feet over 2 stories, this 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom house was situated to take advantage of dramatic views of the eastern Hudson Valley. The rooms have been organized around a central courtyard to provide privacy and light, while the main living and dining spaces are positioned for the views out to the valley below. The design of the house is a contemporary interpretation of the local vernacular, inspired by the farm houses and barns which dot the picturesque landscape. Local bluestone was used extensively at the lower levels and as a paving material to help ground the building on the site. Many of the other materials, both inside and out, were chosen carefully for their longevity, low maintenance and environmental impact considerations.
